Student 2.0, School 2.0, Graduate 2.0?

The days of sitting in a classroom and listening to a lecture are definitely over, or they should be coming to an end. In these days of technological advances teachers and schools need to keep up with the times. In order to prepare students for the web 2.0 world we need to be teaching them what to do with wikis, blogs, rss and how to use social networking sites appropriately. In order to accomplish this, teachers will need to become more educated with web 2.0 and realize that while they are developing students skills they will be developing their own as well. As David Warlick stated in his 2 cents column “teachers are learners and learners are teachers.”

In order to assist with teachers becoming more familiar with web 2.0, I would suggest reading Brian Benzinger’s columns. In Part 1 he gives a detailed list of tools for teacher to use. In Part 2 he describes alternates for basic word processing and different presentations. Part 3 foucses on giving examples of how schools have incorporated some of these web 2.0 options. It would seem like a good place to start. http://www.solutionwatch.com/512/back-to-school-with-the-class-of-web-20-part-1/

Ann-
My anti-spam word was ‘enjoy’. THat’s the most unusual one I have seen.
All of these people who are burying us with tools and information seem to have figured out how to do that for a living.
What do think about pushing for a campus tech curriculum for parents and teachers? If teachers complete a module and assessment they can receive a payment out of their PD funds. We could grab ahold of Web 2.0 and all the hardware and software we really need to know how to use.
BTW, I picked out three ISTE books that you might find beneficial. I can’t let them out for gobs of time, but if you think you can do them in this busy season, I’ll bring them over to you. I have to get the ‘Web 2.0′ from ISTE back from Theresa so we can share that around, too.

Hi Ann,
Your right about us teachers needs to be more aware and efficient with blogging and all the other things that go along with web 2.0. This is what the students are most interested in today. In order to keep them interested during the day we need to implement what interest them. There should be some workshops focused on the different tools we could or should use in order to utilize the web 2.0.
